Blood Diamond which has gained a bad name all over the world, has also not spared Surat Diamond industry. With news of visiting regarding Blood Diamond , several sectors of Surat Diamond industry, has made the industry nervous.

Tough most of the diamond industrialists and Gem and Jeweler Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) passed it as general visits, but a few have also raised doubts. Sources in the industry informed that, since India has the largest share in international market in polishing, number of times on Indian diamond industry of encouraging conflict diamond trade and the NGO representatives are to visit the city to check the market operations locally.

"It is good that we are getting an opportunity to show which is working against blood diamond trade. Indian diamond industry has no links with conflict diamonds and the trade here is operated in compliance with Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS)." says Savji Dholakia of Here Krishna Exports. The two-member team of GW is to visit Here Krishna Exports on Monday.

Among the GW representatives, Annie Dunnebacke, campaigner, and Mike Davis are likely to visit leading diamond units of the city like Sanghiv Exports, Venus Jewels and others along with Indian Diamond Institute (IDI). On one hand, the visit of the NGO is being seen as a platform for the diamond industry here to prove its efforts to curb the violence in world and on the other a few in the industry are takingit as a threat.

President of Surat Diamond association (SDA), said, "There is nothing in Surat's diamond industry to relate it to blood diamond trade, and the NGO wold not be able to prove anything here. We are not informed about the purpose of the NGO's visit and will only know it when the team arrives in Surat"

But a closer look at the world's biggest cutting and polishing industry in Surat, which employs around six lakh people, reveals the decreasing profits have started taking its toll on the workers.

With over 10,000 processing units, the diamond sector has been a gold mine for lakhs of workers till recently in terms of wages. in fact, in the '70s and '80s, a diamond worker used to earn Rs 70 to Rs80 per day. which at that by any industry standards was on a very high side.

Which so much of disposable income, the diamond workers did not mind being little of a spend thrift. But, now with profit margins reducing and cost of production going up, processors find difficult to dole out good wages to workers, which has adversely impacted the workforce.

Around one lakh workers have moved back to their native places in the last few months due the fact that the cost of living has gone up in the diamond-processing hub and the wages offered in the industry are not enough to survive. "I have seen glorious times in this industry. Money was not the issue in those days. But nowadays, work is less and the wages we get are not enough to survive," says Nagin Bhalada, 46, who had migrated from his hometoen in Amreli at the age of 22.

But is the situation really this bad? "yes, there definitely is a slump in profits," says a non-sightholder, "Highly-priced roughs are in short supply, whereas those available currently are not being purcheased. So we have a squeeze on profits in the hot-selling items and growing inventories of categories that aren't selling."

"To add to this last Christmas didn't bring in much revenue. The market usually perks up in January or February, with valentine's Day. But hasn't Been so this year due to the sub prime crisis in US. But, I don't think it is a doomsday scenario," he adds.

The industry pundits believe the industry has come a long way from being the production-driven industry to the quality-driven model. Earlier, manufacturers were more focused on increasing production, but times have changed with

SDA to assist diamond workers to get 20% wages hike.

Under the aegis of SDA (Surat Diamond Association) , diamond manufacturer has decided to implement long demand of 20% hike in wages of diamond workers

The decision has come following the long-pending demand of diamond workers regarding hike in the wage structures in the industry following the increasing prices of essential commodities and drastic decrease in the job work due to shortage of rough diamonds and rising inventories.

Top officials of SDA said hike in the wages of diamond cutters and polishers in the industry will be effective from July1. The diamond manufacturers who had already hiked the wages by 10 to 15 per cent in 2007 have been asked to adjust the difference amount in the wages of workers.

Since long diamond industries has been blamed for exploiting diamond workers. Surat Diamond Association has urged diamond manufacturers to implement once in a week leave to workers to ease the work pressure on workers. The workers employed in the units should work for six days a week in order to increase their efficiency.

"The decision to hike wages by 20 per cent has been unanimously taken by industry stake-holders" said CP Vanani, president, SDA. According to Vanani, the industry is passing through tough times. Apart from slowdown in the US economy, the industry is facing a severe shortage of rough diamond, following pruning of Indian sight holders by Diamond Trading Company (DTC). However, profitability in the industry is low and manufacturers have on other way but to control their rising

It seems that finally IDI (Indian Diamond Institute) has taken initiative and has decided to take responsibility to standardize on gemological laboratories which assign color grades for diamonds and to check unlawful trade practices. The institute is approaching the country to implement the code of conduct on color grading and forming an all India association of laboratories.

Gemological laboratories decide the value of diamonds according to their clarity and color. There are ratings in diamond terminologies for instance. 'D' or 'E' rated diamonds are considered colorless and are much more valuable than an 'R' or 'Y' rated diamond which is light yellow or brown in color.

KK Sharma executive director of IDL, in his recent statement, said, "There are several cases where gemological laboratories are assigning more than one color shade to a single piece of diamond studded in the jewelry. They do this to facilitate their clients and to cheat the customers."

Customers though do not understand these technological terms but experts of this field name color as the number one consideration in choosing a diamond's color is graded on an alphabetical scale from D-Z, with D being absolutely colorless and Z being light yellow.

It is strange that many gemological laboratories in the country are assigning two shades for a single diamond and more than two shades for a number of diamonds in the same jeweler piece. However, the jewelers decide the value of diamonds on higher color grades mentioned in certificates given by laboratories.

As every one knows the country is fast becoming a diamond consumer market, the need is to improve our system of grading diamonds and the gemological laboratories have to be more cautious while grading any diamond. However, the need of the hour is to form an all India association of laboratories and implement the code of conduct for grading diamond.

Many historian believe that 'Gopi' a powerful businessman, settled here in Surat during 1491-1521.Slowly many business man followed his footstep and Surat grew as strong economic center of India. In this way, 'Gopi' is called patron of Surat.

Seeing economic prosperity of Surat many European countries started trade with Surat. It was Surat In all over India that British chose to make their first fort. The British set up a fort was set up in 1612.Once they settled their business here East India Company gave trade rights here. Apart from that even Maratha Ruler,Chatrapati Shivaji raided Surat in 1664.And in 1800, British conquered Surat completely.
